The French/The French ones
« on: April 21, 2017, 04:12:34 am »
Which are correct:
(They are all supposed to mean the same.)

1-The German scientists asked the French scientists if they had any new information. The French promptly replied that they did not.

2-The German scientists asked the French if they had any new information. The French promptly replied that they did not.

3-The German scientists asked the French ones if they had any new information. The French scientists promptly replied that they did not.

Gratefully,
Navi.

I think they are all acceptable.
My choice would be a combination of #2 and #3
The German scientists asked the French if they had any new information. The French scientists promptly replied that they did not.

Of the three, I would only accept #1. It makes it clear that it was the French scientists that were asked and not the French in general.

If you wish to avoid repetition, it could be rephrased something like: The German scientists asked their French colleagues/counterparts...
Best wishes,

The second one is correct "The German scientists asked the French if they had any new information. The French promptly replied that they did not."

That version doesn't state the French were scientists.
