nothing but
« on: February 23, 2018, 04:58:10 pm »
I'd appreciate it if you could help me with the following sentences.

A. He is nothing but an amateur.

B. He is nobody but an amateur.

C. He is no one but an amateur.

It seems to me that B and C are not appropriate.  Could you tell me if I am correct about this?

If they are inappropriate, could it be because "being amateurish" is not a person but one of his attributes, making "nothing" rather than "nobody" or "no one" appropriate?

Thank you very much.

Takashi

Yes. I agree with your correct choice and your analysis.
