How can I ask
« on: February 12, 2016, 05:23:15 pm »
Hello. Help me, please.
How can I make questions about the following sentence.

Japan imports about 5,000 tons of cacao beans from abroad.

How can I ask when I want to get the answer "About 5,000 tons."?

(1) How many cacao beans does Japan import from abroad?
It seems strange because it seems to be a question about the number of cacao beans, not about the weight.

(2) What is the amount of cacao beans which Japan imports from abroad?
Is it OK?

(3) What is the weight of cacao beans which Japan imports from abroad?
How about this?

Is there any good way using the phrase 'How much'?
Give me your advice. Thank you.

I don't think "how much" works because the reply is expected to be a number, and "how much" implies a mass instead of a number.  You could say "How many tons of cacao beans does Japan import from abroad?"

You could use "how much" by making the beans uncountable:

How much cacao bean does Japan import from abroad?
About 5,000 tons.
Best wishes,

Thank you for the answers.
"How many tons of cacao beans does Japan import from abroad?"
It would be simple, I think. But what if we are not sure about the amount, whether tons or kilograms?
I want to make  questions without using 'ton.'  So, "How much cacao bean does Japan import from abroad?" would be nice if possible.
And give me the comment about each sentence.
(1) Q: How many cacao beans does Japan import from abroad?                               A: About 5,000 tons ( of cacao beans ).
(2) Q: What is the amount of cacao beans which Japan imports from abroad?           A: About 5,000 tons.
(3) Q: What is the weight of cacao beans which Japan imports from abroad?             A: About 5,000 tons.
(4) Q: What amount of cacao beans does Japan import from abroad?                       A: About 5,000 tons ( of cacao beans ).
Give me your ideas.
Thanks in advance.

As I see it:

1. No; there would be squillions
2. No; amount is uncountable and doesn't sit well with 'beans'. Use 'bean' and it's OK.
3. That's OK. You are specifically asking for the weight.
4. No; same reason as #2

It is possible.  Duncan's sentence is the best option. :)

Thank you for the answer.
Then, when I am asked, "How much cacao bean does Japan import from abroad?" , what will the answer be?
(1) About 5,000 tons of cacao been.
(2) About 5,000 tons of cacao beens.
Can we say (2)?

Well, either would be fine, but the natural answer would be simply "About 5,000 tons".
